PREHISTORY

~ 2.4 M BP to 430 BC
The prehistory of North Africa, in what is the today’s Maghreb, begins with the apparition of the first stone tools around 2.4 million years ago, and ends with the first writings mentioning the Libyans (Amazigh people) by Herodotus around 430 BC (see the Timeline). The date of the end of the prehistoric period is still subject to debate; for some it would end with the writings of Herodotus, and for others it would rather be around 800 BC with the arrival of the Phoenicians who founded Carthage and who introduced the Phoenician alphabet.
